Two types of dependent visas are available: temporary and permanent.

Temporary visas are available for individuals holding visas such as work, intra-company transfer, student, or fiancé. On the other hand, permanent visas are granted to spouses or children below the age of 18-21 years old who are considered immigration dependents.

Dependent visa requirements vary between countries, and therefore, there are no universal eligibility criteria. However, certain criteria are typically common across most countries, including:

  1. A valid passport for the dependent applicant. 
  2. Making the payment for the application along with the application with details filled.
  3. Adequate financial resources of the sponsor to support the dependents.
  4. Medical examination results and proof of adequate insurance for the dependents.

For instance, to qualify for the Dependent Student Visa in Australia, the following eligibility criteria must be met:

  1. The dependent must be a spouse, partner, or dependent child of the primary applicant.

  3. In the case of a dependent civil partner, the applicant must have lived with their partner for a minimum of 12 months.
  4. The dependent child must be the biological or adopted child of the primary applicant or their partner.
  5. The dependent child must be under the age of 18 and unmarried or engaged.
  6. The dependent child must be enrolled in an educational program in Australia.

Those holding Temporary Dependent Visas have fewer work rights based on their visa validity.

 

For dependents in the US

Dependents who are granted permanent residence visas have the freedom to live, study, and work for as long as they maintain their status as permanent residents. Furthermore, if the primary applicant is enrolled in a Master’s or a PhD, the dependent can work full time.

For dependents in Australia

For family members of master’s or doctoral students, there are no restrictions on the number of hours they can work. Similarly, dependents of visa holders under subclasses 573 and 574 can also work without any limitations. 

For dependents in Canada

In Canada, dependents are allowed to work by obtaining an Open Work Permit. With this permit, they are granted the flexibility to work full-time in any part of Canada, except for Quebec. Moreover, they are free to reside and work anywhere within the country, outside of Quebec. With an open work permit, your family member can work for any employer in Canada, except for those listed as ineligible due to non-compliance with conditions, or employers who regularly offer services like striptease, erotic dance, escort services, or erotic massages.

For Dependents in the UK  

On a Dependent Visa within the Tier 2 stream, the dependent individual can work in the UK. The terms of employment will dictate that they can work until their Dependent Visa remains valid. Also, upon a successful application for a Dependent Visa, they will be permitted to enter and reside in the UK without limitations. Furthermore, there are no work restrictions imposed on Dependent Visa holders, granting them the freedom to work in any job, regardless of skill level.

  • Any other relevant documents that are equivalent to a Certificate of Eligibility.
